Telefónica Innovación Digital (TID) carries out Research, Development, and Innovation (R&D&I) activities within the Telefónica group in the field of telecommunications, telematics and information systems, as well as to nurturing the Telefónica group with the necessary support elements for its development. These activities are primarily directed, though not exclusively, towards the study and preparation of documentation for Product Development, Exploratory Development, Applied Research, Technological Reports, Situational Studies on techniques and technologies, Testing Services, Quality Control, and Audits.
Bringing the expertise from previous research projects, TID leads the data management activities in the cPAID, with focus on the design and implementation of a data fabric to support an efficient, secure exchange of data flows among the components of the cPAID platform. With this approach, TID selects the data fabric as the data infrastructure to enable data interoperability and reusability, facilitating the integration of components such as Machine Learning (ML) models and unlocking unforeseen use cases, while ensuring a governed access and consumption of these data.
Data fabric is a novel paradigm in the scope of data management, which tackles the decentralization of data management by providing unified access to data silos supported by active metadata (see Figure 1). TID brings to the cPAID project an open-source implementation of a data fabric called CANDIL, which runs a knowledge graph at its core based on semantic web standards such as RDF, OWL and SPARQL. A knowledge graph enables linking data from heterogenous data silos while providing a common understanding of the data based on formal knowledge representations such as ontologies and taxonomies.
With an extensive experience and presence in standardization, TID promotes these ideas in a variety of standardization bodies. In this context, TID chairs and actively contributes to the newly created the Technical Committee (TC) DATA within ETSI, focused on data management aspects such as semantic interoperability, data governance, or data infrastructures. Similarly, TID is evangelizing at the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) the use of knowledge graphs and the semantic web as key technologies for data integration and data interoperability in network management field.
